Police Memorial held at Evergreen

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Police, community members and city leaders gathered Friday at Evergreen Cemetery to conduct the annual wreath laying ceremony to honor fallen officers.

    President of the Alaska Peace Officers Association Capital City Chapter Kirt Stage-Harvey provided introductions at the ceremony.

    Stage-Harvey shared that in the United States last year, there were 616 officer line of duty deaths. He said that 438 of those were attributed to the contraction of COVID-19 while on duty.

    To date, there have been 110 line of duty deaths this year, including eight canine patrol dogs. Alaska records that there have been 49 line of duty deaths and two canine deaths. In Southeast Alaska, 18 line of duty deaths were recorded.

    Father Gordon Blue with the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church provided the invocation.

    Juneau Police Lieutenants Jeremy Weske and Krag Campbell read the fallen officer honor roll and tolled the memorial bell.

    Chad Scussel, Regional Commander for the United States Forest Service, delivered a message to the gathering.

    The ceremony was held at the gravesite of Juneau Police Officer Richard J. Adair, who fell in the line of duty in 1979 along with Officer Jim Earl Kennedy.

    An Honor Guard laid a wreath at Adair's gravesite, as well as the gravesite of Juneau Police Detective Donald Thomas Dull. Dull fell in 1964, he was the first line of duty death in Juneau.

    Officer Karl William Reishus was remembered, he fell in 1992.
