Warm temperatures alter plans for sled dog race

Bethel, Alaska (KINY) Temperatures reached 36 degrees in Bethel last week causing problems for a planned sled dog race.

KYUK news reported that race organizers changed the route of the due to the amount of open water and the possible dangers involved.

The Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race will instead run two laps to its normal halfway point and back this Friday.  This is the first time in race history that the route has been changed.  It traditionally spans 300 miiles across the Kuskokwim River from Bethel to Aniak and back.

The race committee could be tasked with coming up with a permanent route that doesn't cross the river.
