Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Support for the Alaska Marine Highway System has come from a statewide business organization.
Robert Venables, the executive director of the Southeast Conference, was on Action Line after returning from a meeting of the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce.
"I'm very, very happy that the State Chamber did adopt a new position as a priority for the state chamber in support of a reformed, right-sized, and sustainable Alaska Marine Highway System as a critical component of the statewide intermodal transportation system and economy of Alaska."
Venables added that there's a growing realization that the business community has to be part of the solution and support the reformed effort going forward.
The conference has called for the creation of an independent authority to operate the marine highway system.
The Southeast Conference was organized in 1958 in part to work for the development of the Alaska Marine Highway System.
